Patience (Acrylic, paper on canvas)

Discover all that you are not — body, feelings thoughts, time, space, this or that — nothing, concrete or abstract, which you perceive can be you. The very act of perceiving shows that you are not what you perceive.
Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj
There is a game played in saints’ shrines in Pakistan. Visits to these shrines overwhelm one’s senses through colour, symbols, textures and icons. When a seeker finds the Master, she is led to ultimately find the nothingness in herself. The Master is reduced to a distraction like all other elements in the playground. In between, there is a period beyond time. And by the time that happens, you find yourself in love with the colours and the textures. Freedom is inevitable.

The artworks are an assembly of collaged paintings and photographs. The painted work was developed during artist residency at 126 Artist-run Gallery. The photographs were taken on a visit to a shrine in Northwest Pakistan in 2007. ‘Patience’ and ‘Void’ were exhibited at 126 Artist-Run Gallery’s annual members’ show in June 2018.
