Luan Gallery, Athlone
States, Stations is a newly commissioned four-part installation presented in Luan Gallery’s Library Gallery.
Drawing on the Sufi distinction between ahwal—states that arrive unbidden—and maqamat—stations developed through sustained practice—the exhibition explores perception, bodily attention, queer experience and the social conditions that shape what a body is permitted to feel.
A suspended painted scroll, a velvet enclosure, three fabric thresholds and translucent vinyl works across eight windows transform the gallery into a sequence of passage, shelter, membrane and spine. Rather than illustrating a spiritual system, the works use movement, light, surface and proximity to examine how perception changes—and how a body moves between what is practised and what arrives.

Three suspended thresholds lead to no fixed rooms. Each marks a condition of transition: an interval between one state and another, where passage itself becomes the destination.

A structure for being held rather than housed. Its protective enclosure remains intimate and restrictive, asking when shelter becomes containment.

Dimensions variable
The windows become a permeable skin. Image, light and the environment outside enter the work together, continually altering what the gallery can contain.

A suspended, reversible painted form organised through anatomical systems. Its vertical movement links ascent with pressure, attention and the body’s physical limits.
